Andy Stanley was the speaker at the second main session.  He spoke about vision and was nails as usual.  Here are some of his quotes followed by some of my thoughts.

“What’s clear in your head has to become clear in the minds of the people around you.  People don’t ask stupid questions – they just communicate how poorly you have cast the vision.”  This is something that I need to work on.  More often than not, I want people to just accept what we’re doing because it’s me.

“Define the problem and craft vision as the solution to the problem.”  If people are going to follow a vision they have to be convinced that it is worth doing.  That convincing is going to happen as you open their eyes to something that isn’t right.  An injustice, a tragedy, a need.

“Celebrate the vision consistently.  Vision is abstract at the start; it doesn’t have pictures and examples.  When you catch someone living it out – use them as an example.  Celebrate the win.  Tell stories of people ‘getting it’.”

“Embrace the vision personally and publicly.  Illustrate that you have bought in, even if that means putting yourself in the spotlight.”  This one is hard for me because I tend to shrink from the spotlight.  I’d rather blend into the background and go unnoticed.  But sometimes the picture of my life might be just the illustration someone else needs to understand the vision and buy into it.
