Loyal Fan and Darth Pudge August 14, 2008

Just read an article on the most loyal fans in baseball.  Guess who topped the list?  Me and all of my fellow Rangers fans.  JD I know you’ll appreciate that Boston fans were #2.  You can read the article here.

I know we’re a couple of weeks past the trade deadline, but two former big name Ranger players moved teams.  Mark Texieria traded from the Braves to the Angels.  My best wishes to Mark.  He played some great ball for us while he was here and I hope he gets a ring with the Angels this postseason.  The other was Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez, one of the greatest catchers to ever put on the gear.  He was a Ranger for the first decade of his career and won a boatload of Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers, All-Star honors and an MVP.  I always liked Pudge until he went to the dark side.  He approved a trade from the Tigers to the Yankees.  This bothers me so much because he was part of the 3 Ranger teams in ’96, ’98, and ’99 that won the division only to face the Evil Empire in the first round of the playoffs and get ousted.  That was when my Yankee hating began.  A good friend put it best when he reminded me of the words of Obi Wan Kenobi in his penultimate dialogue with Anakin Skywalker.  “You were the chosen one.  It was said that you would destory the Sith, not join them”.

You were our brother Pudge.  We loved you.

That is actually a very impressive stat. I like how the supposed “Baseball Heaven” that is St. Louis could only muster up an 8th place finish. Mom and I used to go to games that terrible 1995 season they speak of, because tickets were cheap and plentiful.

Sorry about the last few days, Clint. Its about time Papi started swinging his bat though.
